Bernadette is very oblivious. It's hilariously hilarious to watch other normal people try to communicate with her, or try to speak to her condescendingly because she 1) doesn't care and 2) probably doesn't understand. I love it so much. Major examples of this are following:
- "ME: (Feigning interest, because really, I could give a ****, but wow, is this guy chatty) Oh? What do you do?" (Semple 125).
- "'For a long time,' Elgie [her husband] answered, not eating cake because the man has discipline..." (124).
These two quotes from the book really make Bernadette's identity very obvious and unique, and these two quotes made me laugh out loud. I really love her talking about her husband because she seems to look up to him and love him a lot based on her talk about him. AHH SHE'S SO CUTE.
| Bernadette has no filter. |
- "One of them [homeless person] hogging the milk counter because he's sprinkling free cinnamon on his head" (127).
- "Seattle is the only city where you step in **** and pray, Please God, let this be dog ****" (127).
- "Let's play a game. I'll say a word, and you say the first word that pops into your head. Ready? ME: Seattle. YOU: Rain" (132).
There are so many more examples are her amazingness that this blog post is again going to be too long if I continue. And yes, I still have The Goldfinch sitting on my eReader bookshelf, collecting moths worth of dust. Maybe it belongs somewhere else...? Anyways, if you're still interested in Bernadette, stay tuned for more about her on my blog!
